Recognizing when we’re feeling particularly doomful, and perhaps trying to work out if there’s something specific that’s enhancing the doom, can start with noticing how you feel, both physically and emotionally, by paying closer attention to what is happening in your body so that you can gather an idea of what’s going on in your mind. Noticing symptoms early means you can do something about it before it turns into a full-blown episode.

For me, there are a few things that I know will make me feel more exhausted and low, and when I feel myself starting to descend it’s usually because of one of the following:

I’m about a week away from getting my period and the hormone cocktail has made my depression more severe.

I haven’t been getting enough sleep.

I’ve had a few social occasions in a row and not much alone time.

Conversely, I’ve been alone too long and haven’t had any meaningful affection.

I’ve been drinking too much.
